B1: Core Service - Provide programs that raise public awareness of boating risks and encourage improvements in recreational boating behaviors, such as increased life jacket wear. |
Target #1: Provide Kids Don"t Float school programs to at least 5,000 participants on a yearly basis..
Beginning in 2012 the Office of Boating Safety began expanding its course offering to include skills and more comprehensive training. These classes (pool sessions, instructor courses and Alaska Water Wise) all require more time — the Alaska Water Wise (AWW) instructor course takes up to 24 hours. Instructor training (especially for the USCG personnel) has seen a big increase - all of these “advanced” courses appear to have a bigger impact on a change in behavior but also require significant staff time. Target #2: Provide at least 3,000 adult and child life jackets for the Kids Don"t Float life jacket loaner program on a yearly basis..
The Office of Boating Safety was denied approval for the purchase of Kid"s Don"t Float Life Jackets in 2020, forcing the program to seek alternate sources for procuring life jackets. Partnering with Alaska 529 and PM Pediatrics has enabled the program to continue to provide life jackets for loan. Target Last Modified: 11/07/2023 |
