Target #1: Administer federal grant awards to develop the agriculture industry and promote food security Year Quarter 1 2025 $260,000 2024 $2,049,025 2023 $6,049,103 2022 $3,731,228 2021 $3,409,359 2020 $2,190,076 2019 $253,015 Analysis of results and challenges: Division of Agriculture is the recipient of several federal USDA grant awards. Federal grant opportunities for food security have become more available since the pandemic, supply chain issues, etc. Included in the FY2023 amount is Country of Origin Labeling, Organic Cost Share Assistance, CAPS Pest Detection/ Infrastructure, Specialty Crop Block/ HR 133, Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops, Local Food Purchase Assistance, Microgrants for Food Security Programs, and Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program. These grants represent funds that were awarded in FY2023 but may be multiyear, with only the one year reported. Although these grants do provide for a percentage to cover personnel, it is not sufficient to cover all personnel administration costs. Target Last Modified: 10/16/2025

Target #1: Provide inspections to meet statutory, federal, and international contract requirements for access to domestic and international markets. These inspections, such as, phytosanitary for export, certified seed potatoes and HGAP food safety audits are either required by regulation or a service provided for market access in both foreign and domestic markets. The pest detection survey program, include nursery inspections, invasive pest trapping as well as pest permit reviews for agricultural products imported into Alaska, which protect Alaska`s environment and agriculture industries from unwanted pest introductions. The increase from 2022 to 2023 is due to a needed expansion of pest trapping efforts. Alaska continues to be relatively clean from unwanted pests but increased imports of nursey stock continues to be a pathway for introduction. Inspection activities promote food security as they provide needed access for market expansion and protect industries from unwanted pest introductions into the environment.
