This recovery reflects considerable efforts on behalf of UAA including ongoing recruitment and retention efforts, as well as adapting to new educational demands (e.g., online learning), new program offerings, and a return to more traditional in-person learning. Total Number of Certificates and Degrees Awarded Fiscal Year Total Awards FY 2024 1,706 FY 2023 1,682 FY 2022 1,895 FY 2021 2,079 FY 2020 2,339 Analysis of results and challenges: In FY 2024, there was a slight increase in the total number of awards to 1,706, an uptick of 1.4% compared to FY 2023. Within this increase it is important to note that the overall enrollment declines of the past are reflected in the total number of degrees and certificates awarded. While UAA students typically spread their education out over several years (currently averaging 6.28 years of often non-consecutive enrollments) so that the long-term effects of external factors will not be fully realized for some time. This represents increases at all individual campus locations including a 3.3% increase at the Anchorage Campus, 27.8% on the Kenai Peninsula campus, 17.3% on the Kodiak campus, 13.5% on the Matanuska Susitna Campus and 4.9% on the Prince William Campus. It is encouraging that in just one year, FY2024 certificate and associate award numbers increased 24%. These high-impact courses, taken individually or as part of a group of courses leading to a credential, are an important part of UAA`s contribution to training the workforce of Alaska. UAA delivers Career and Technical Education courses in fields such as process technology, welding, radiography, pharmacy, marine technology, and many more areas. As UAA explores how to best meet the needs of its communities and students, some courses are now offered as non-credit, such as the fishing vessel recertification training. Additionally, recent new programs in Early Childhood coming online, as well as the upcoming development of new apprenticeship models are all anticipated to help contribute to the total number of not just education related academic degrees, but also in helping ensure a strong cadre of educators for the future of Alaska. Retention data is also disaggregated into groups such as full and part-time students to help UAA address and work towards the closing of achievement gaps. The steady increase (7% points over the last 5 cohorts) in First-Time, Full-Time associate degree seeking retention of students who start in one fall (the entry cohort) and return the following fall is a strong indicator that UAA is continuing to make progress in this critical indicator. While there was a slight dip in the Fall 2019 cohort (which had to return in Fall 2020), the 4% increase in the most recent Fall 2022 cohort indicates that UAA`s retention efforts are proving effective, particularly for this population of students who may have been disproportionately affected during the global crisis. This single year increase of 6% points is a strong indicator that retention efforts are crossing degree levels, especially within the full-time population. Recent institutional efforts on retention also appear to be having an impact and UAA is currently working on larger internal studies to understand how these efforts may impact students at all levels. First-Time, Part-Time Baccalaureate-Seeking Retention from First to Second Fall Fiscal Year Retention Rate FY 2022 43% FY 2021 47% FY 2020 51% FY 2019 37% FY 2018 42% Analysis of results and challenges: Data and research from the National Center for Education Statistics suggests that part-time students have lower retention rates for a variety of factors. These include family obligations, financial challenges, and changes in economic climate to name just some of those reasons. The drop in the Fall 2019 retention rates mirrors in scope that seen nationally. Interestingly, UAA students in this group realized a decrease in retention over the past year. The cause of this is not fully understood, but as mentioned above, UAA is in the early stages of a study to understand what institutional efforts may have helped other groups and if those efforts may also be applicable to this demographic. Today students who were at one time a UAA middle college student now make up 5.4% of the overall population. This is up from 1% in FY 2020. Target #1: Average Fees per Student Methodology: Using Banner data, average fees is the total of total fees collected through Lab/Materials Fees (9159), Computer Laboratory Fees (9161), and Noncredit and Special Course Fees (9151) divided by the total distinct headcount of all credit enrolled UAA students in a particular fiscal year. This has included several focused efforts to reduce or eliminate lab and material fees, computer lab fees as well as noncredit and special course fees. When looking at the average fees per student over the past five years, it is impressive that UAA has been able to return fees to FY 2020 levels. This is especially important as according to the Higher Education Price Index, costs in higher education for public, doctoral granting institutions has risen on average, 3.5% every year since FY 2020. Target #1: Textbook Affordability Methodology: As reported through UAA bookstore for all course sections that have exclusively as an open education resource (OER), no text required (NTR), or a unique section where a required text is less than $40 through the bookstore. Data represents total count of items since new bookstore software was deployed. Textbook Affordability Fiscal Year Total Count FY 2024 3928 Analysis of results and challenges: One of the major strategies the UAA has undertaken to help reduce the financial burden for students is to work with faculty and the bookstore to offer more open educational resources alongside low (less than $40) and no-cost textbook options. Faculty have embraced this effort and have modified their classes in FY 2024 to make nearly 4,000 course sections, representing over 70% of all sections offered, more affordable for students.
