The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is a student-centered university that provides instruction in liberal arts, professional, and technical fields. On the homelands of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples, the UAS serves the coastal environments, cultures, economies, and communities of Alaska, through interdisciplinary education, workforce development, and scholarship, research, and creative activity. UAS has consistently maintained an Alaska Native student enrollment of at least 20% for the past five fiscal years, demonstrating its commitment to this important demographic. This effort is supported by the UA-wide Alaska Native Success Initiative, which aims to enhance the educational outcomes and experiences of Alaska Native students across the university system. Faculty at UAS engage in diverse research and creative activities, addressing critical issues and perspectives unique to Southeast Alaska and beyond. These projects, largely funded through external grants, often involve collaboration with colleagues at UAF, UAA, and other institutions nationally and internationally. These research efforts not only enrich classroom materials and experiences but also provide undergraduate students with valuable opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research. Target #1: Student credit hours: UAS students were enrolled in 30,575 student credit hours in FY24
While the number of student credit hours has declined in recent years due to factors such as reduced state funding, course offerings, and external uncertainties, the new Chancellor, who started in July 2023, is committed to increasing enrollment. The university is in the process of developing a strategic enrollment plan and a broader strategic plan to improve both recruitment and retention, aiming to reverse the downward trend in student credit hours. Initiatives like the "Great Colleges to Work For" survey provide valuable insights into employee satisfaction and help guide efforts to improve workplace culture. Since joining the Alaska Advantage program in fall 2020, UAS has seen continued growth in high school student enrollment, reflecting its dedication to dual enrollment as a strategic priority.
